The nice folks at Etsy invited Aaron Carámbula, Jason Wong, Dennis Payongayong and myself (a.k.a Friends of Type) to contribute a mural as part of their 2012 Etsy Holiday Shop. They invited 10 artists to create a portrait of an individual whom they have found inspiring, live in the storefront window. Having been inspired by John Hughes, all of us at FoT felt the last line in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off was perfect for the occasion…. a reminder to those who are too busy to stop and enjoy life.

The talented folks at Office here in San Francisco developed and curated a Bigfoot-inspired art show called, ‘I Don’t Believe in You Either’. They invited myself and other local creatives to contribute a tree round for the show. I recently acquired wood carving tools from my dad which I used to hand carve the word ‘Gigantic’. To me this word encapsulates the larger than life folklore of this mysterious hairy being.

Friends of Type was invited to design skateboard decks for donation at Bordo Bello’s annual show in Denver, Colorado. Aaron, Dennis, Jason and I came up with the simple idea of lettering up four basic skate moves which were then laser cut out of different colored grip tapes. Seattle Met – Reasons to Love Winter

Friends of Type

Friends of Type is an online sketchblog that features original typographic design and lettering. Created by Aaron Carámbula and I, it was originally used as a way to stay in touch after I left Brooklyn and moved West. We then invited Jason Wong and Dennis Payongayong to join and together the four of us made Friends of Type into what it is today – a type and lettering collective.

I sketched the logo for Friends of Type the same night the concept of the site was conceived, and have kept it as is as a reminder of where we started. (The site was created within 24 hours, and I have the ichat thread to prove it!)

The New York Times introduced a new feature in their Sunday magazine called ‘The One-Page Magazine.’ It features a few short ‘news’ clippings that cover a variety of topics. One consistent short is ‘Word of the Week’ that includes new culturally relevant words and their definitions. An artist is invited to illustrate the word, keeping in mind the defintion. Here I created an illustration for the word SMEARCH.

1. To Google someone in hopes of finding bad news about him or her. 2. A Web session seeking damning information. “Repeated smearches yielded the picture of Representative Chris Lee’s shirtless physique, which led to his resignation.” See also: Freudenstalke (to take pleasure in negative findings). Dockers

When Dockers repositioned their brand with the tagline, ‘Wear the Pants’, they launched an impressive campaign aimed at helping the brand steer away from their Dilbert days and into one that felt youthful and contemporary. The campaign’s iconic creative was formed by various silhouettes molded out of type, paired with the image of the pant. Each silhouette carried a different message and personality. Different artists were used to create the designs, which gave me the flexibility to have fun with the content. These print ads ran on the day of the Super Bowl and NCAA final championship.

Fader Magazine

The last page of each issue for Fader Magazine is called ‘Fade Out’. Fader invites an artist to contribute work that is intended to illustrate the theme of the issue. When the magazine’s former creative Justin Thomas Kay contacted Friends of Type to contribute for ‘Fade Out’ we jumped at the chance. The theme of the issue was ‘NOW’ so Aaron, Dennis, Jason and I each illustrated several versions of the word and then compiled it into a lettering collage.

50 and 50 – States Motto Project

Dan Cassaro a.k.a. Young Jerks invited Friends of Type to contribute to a group exhibition called, ‘The State Mottos Project’. We were assigned the state Michigan because FoT’s co-creator Aaron Carámbula was born there. The idea for this piece came from a conversation I had with Aaron – when he spoke about what region of the lower peninsula he was from he pointed to his palm. (Apparently, this is a gesture commonly used by Michigan-ites, as the shape of the hand/palm geographically looks like Michigan.)

This is by far my favorite project I’ve ever been a part of. While working in New York, the design studio I was at was awarded the rebranding of the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts located in San Francisco. As a California native, the contemporary museum was close to my heart and I worked hard to make the logotype and the collateral memorable. Not a day goes by when I am walking or biking to my studio.
